Call to set up Coir City in Alappuzha
Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal proposed the setting up of a Coir City in Alappuzha to give the high-quality golden fibres produced in Kerala greater visibility and new markets worldwide.
Speaking at the inauguration of the international seminar held in connection with the Coir Kerala-2012 international trade fair, he said as the epicentre of coir production Alappuzha is well placed to host such a Coir City.
Production techniques used in the vibrant coir sector in the region range from the very traditional to the cutting-edge.
Alappuzha offers umpteen opportunities in the field of research and development, Venugopal said, as he mooted the idea of a Coir Campus in the town.
