Maharajas College in the city is getting ready for hosting a grand reunion of its old students on February 11. Titled ‘Maharajakeeyam', the event will be the biggest of its kind in Asia, according to the organisers, Maharaja's College Old Students Association.
About 1.5 lakh students have completed education in the college since 1932 and there is every reason to believe that a large number of them will turn up at the function, says K.R.Viswambharan, the president of the association, a former District Collector and present Vice- Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University.
Apart from a main venue, there will be five secondary venues for the get-together of various batches categorised on the basis of years of study. Cultural programmes will also be organised at these venues.
A souvenir named ‘Maharajakeeyam', is to be released on the occasion. It will be a compendium of the memories of the alumni. A brief history of the institution will form part of the contents.
Alumni who have made a mark in various fields will grace the occasion. Defence Minister A.K.Antony, Union Minister Vayalar Ravi, former ministers K.R.Gowriamma, Thomas Isaac, Viswanatha Menon, cine actors Mammootty, Dileep, singer Biju Narayanan, litterateurs O.N.V.Kurup, M.K.Sanu, M.Leelavathy, M.Achuthan and others are expected to participate.
A musical treat by well known singers who had spent their early years as students of the college, is another highlight of the programme, according to the organisers.
